Covestro Bags Design Award for Sustainable Material Innovation

Covestro, a global player in advanced polymer materials, has been honoured with the prestigious Good Design Award for its innovative work in transforming recycled engineering plastics into premium design materials. Using Color, Material, and Finish (CMF) solutions, Covestro has demonstrated how sustainability can become a true design differentiator, enabling brands to create products that are both environmentally responsible and visually appealing.

At the core of the project are five nature-inspired CMF themes—Earth, Water, Stone, Gem, and Black & White. Developed through market research, consumer surveys, expert interviews, and big data analysis, these themes celebrate the unique qualities of recycled materials rather than masking them. By applying these strategies to recycled polycarbonates, Covestro elevates engineering plastics into premium design elements that resonate emotionally with consumers while maintaining high performance standards.

Technical Excellence in Recycling and Circularity

The innovation leverages polycarbonate’s exceptional recyclability. Manufacturers collect, sort, shred, clean, and reprocess end-of-life polycarbonate products, such as water bottles, into high-performance granules. They then repurpose these granules in premium applications, proving that circularity and high-quality design can successfully coexist.
