All The Land Rover You Need

The 2024 Land Rover Defender 110 is positioned between the more compact Defender 90 (which offers urban agility thanks to a smaller wheelbase), and the more spacious Defender 130, designed for those who need more space for people and cargo. The 110 offers the versatility of an SUV with dimensions that are easier for city life, while still accommodating a family and all their cargo.

Changes this year include the availability of a 493-horsepower V8 for both the 110 and the 130, along with new standard features. These include a panoramic moonroof, adaptive cruise control, fog lights, a 10-speaker Meridian audio, and a heated steering wheel that are now standard. The upgrades are nice, but the biggest news is the new V8 engine option. We spent a week with it in X-Dynamic SE trim, to see how it does as a family hauler and adventurer.

Exterior Looks: A Unique Design Approach

Strengths

Weaknesses

  • Unmistakably Land Rover
  • Makes a heck of a first impression
  • Looks the part of an off-roader

  • Large for narrow parking spots
  • It’s a big step to get inside

The styling on the Defender is anything but timid. It’s big and bold and sort of boxy, with lots of personality. It looks rugged, as if it should be able to tackle off-road adventures, and it backs that up with genuine capability. It’s unmistakably Land Rover in its styling with aggressive angles and a strong presence. A key part of the design are the Alpine windows, which are long, narrow windows on the roofline above the cargo area. They provide extra light and are a design detail that makes the Defender truly unique.

Interior & On-Board Technology: Adventure Meets Luxury

Strengths

Weaknesses

  • Plenty of passenger room
  • Comfortable and supportive seats
  • Durable yet high-end materials

  • Lacks refinement
  • May be too plain for some

Step inside, and you’re greeted by an environment where luxury is not just an add-on but integral to the vehicle’s DNA. The Defender 110 X-Dynamic SE offers a two-row configuration with seating for five, ensuring comfort for every occupant. Note that there is the option for a third row, but it’s incredibly tight, so we’d recommend going up to the 130 if more seating is something you really need. Still, the perches are wrapped in high-quality materials, with options for both leather and synthetic upholstery, providing not only a luxurious feel but also durability for the rigors of off-road adventures. Though beautifully appointed, it doesn’t have the same sense of refined luxury you’ll find in something like the BMW X5 or the Jeep Wagoneer.

In the rear, passengers get ample legroom and headroom, making the Defender 110 a family-friendly choice. The cabin’s design ensures practicality with clever storage solutions and a functional layout, enhancing the overall comfort and utility. The center console offered great storage for small suff with two levels and the ease of reaching straight down into that second level rather than having to lean over awkwardly to reach items from the side.

Infotainment: Keeping You Connected

There’s a standard 11.4-inch infotainment touchscreen built into the dashboard within easy reach of driver and passenger. It has all the usual suspects, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A unique feature is a charging port located high on the dashboard on the passenger side with a shelf designed to hold your phone securely while it charges. There’s also a Meridian sound system that creates an immersive audio experience. Multiple USB ports, a digital driver display, and a suite of driver assistance technologies round out the offering.

Performance: Aggressive Power Delivery

Strengths

Weaknesses

  • New V8 engine option
  • Responsive 6-cylinder
  • Engaging drive

  • Fuel economy
  • Loud when accelerating

Our test car featured the 3.0-liter inline-six engine with mild-hybrid technology that delivered 395 horsepower with 406 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission, providing not just power but also a level of refinement that’s rare in vehicles with such off-road chops.

Performance Impressions

It accelerates aggressively, making getting up to highway speeds effortless. Merging into high-speed traffic is easy and stress-free as this engine consistently provides all the power you need no matter the situation. Despite its size, it feels like a nimble SUV, so even getting enough power to pass slower vehicles on busy highways is easy. The only drawback to that power is that the engine, though well-mannered overall, can get loud during hard acceleration. More aggressive acceleration comes with the V8, which should be enough to satisfy driving enthusiasts. If that’s your priority, then something like the BMX X5 M might be more to your liking.

Only those invited to the party get a chance to own a very rare Defender.

Ride and Handling

On highways, the Defender 110 is composed, with a smooth ride and barely noticeable road and wind noise, which is impressive given its shape and size. Steering is precise, giving the driver confidence in quick maneuvers and on narrow city streets. It was also a champ in winter weather. We took the Defender 110 out into the snow and ice, and it performed beautifully, easily working through slush and packed snow even on roads that were poorly plowed and rutted.

Fuel Economy

The 2024 Defender 110 gets an EPA-estimated 17/20/18 mpg city/highway/combined. While okay for the class, it’s not especially strong. Loaded down with people and cargo, you’ll need to budget for fuel carefully on that family road trip.

Verdict: Priced For Luxury

The 2024 Defender 110 is available in a range of six trims. The base S starts at $60,600, not including $1,475 destination. That’s premium-car territory, but still budget friendly as a luxury vehicle. At the top is the exclusive Carpathian Edition at a price of $118,600. While that’s too much for even many on a more flexible budget, the trims in the middle offer plenty of opportunity to get the Defender 110 that suits your needs at a price that fits your wallet.

The 2024 Land Rover Defender 110 makes a statement as a luxury SUV that shows you have arrived. It has rugged styling inside and out that is eye-catching without being gaudy and has an interior that will keep you comfortable even on the longest trips. Powerful engine options make the driving experience engaging with the tech and features you need to get you and the family through the day. Those looking for a capable SUV that can handle pretty much anything that gets in its way will find the 2024 Land Rover Defender 110 a worthy choice.
