7th grade students design and build tiny home for the homeless
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU/Gray News) – Seventh grade students in Alaska are pitching in to help the homeless.
The students at STrEaM Academy in Anchorage have designed and built a tiny house to address the city’s housing needs.
The project started last year with the school’s then-seventh grade students and involved research researching local housing needs and creating blueprints.
The house, which measures 8 feet by 8 feet, has a seven-degree roof angle to manage snow and rain and cost $3,650.58.
About 60 students helped to build the structure, with tasks ranging from foundation leveling to roofing.
The school will donate the tiny home next spring to a local church doing a drive for homeless housing. Future plans include building furniture.
